What is IP surveillance?
IP surveillance is a digitised and networked version of closed-circuit television (CCTV). In an IP surveillance system, an IP camera records video footage and the resulting content is distributed over an IP (internet protocol) network. Digitisation offers a number of benefits over traditional analogue CCTV, including:
- Improved search capability
- Greater ease of use
- Better quality images and no degradation of content over time
- The ability to record and play simultaneously
- The ability to compress content for improved storage
Adding networking capability to security IP cameras provides additional benefits, including:
- Improved ability for remote viewing and control (anyone on the network can potentially see video from any camera connected to the network)
- Ability to store data in any geographic location
- Greater ease of distribution (an image of a crime suspect, for example, can be immediately distributed to officials)
- The ability to connect to email and other communication systems so that alerts can be sent automatically
There is a growing industry trend towards replacing analogue CCTV with IP surveillance systems. Not just because of the benefits above, but also because the gap in price between IP surveillance and traditional CCTV has reduced considerably.
Why do I need security IP cameras?
It’s the same old story….it isn’t until something goes wrong that you wished you had bought that insurance, locked that door, braced that ladder etc. The same applies to video surveillance. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need it at all. But as we know, we don’t live in an ideal world.
Of course, cameras are useful not just for stopping or identifying dishonest behaviour. They allow you to be in more than one place at once, making you more efficient. And being able to access your images via everyday devices such as smartphones and tablets has made it simple to keep an eye on what is important to you.

Who can benefit from IP security cameras?
Farmers
Calving cameras
No need to get up at 3 o’clock in the morning in the rain to check on your beasts. Simply turn on your smart phone or tablet to view them in the comfort of your bedroom, or from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
Securing equipment
Most farms have thousands of pounds’ worth of equipment on the premises. Increasingly we hear stories of quad bikes and even diesel being stolen. Cameras can, importantly, act as a deterrent to would-be thieves and also as a means of identifying them should the worst happen.
Monitoring staff
You can’t be everywhere at once. A few well placed cameras can help you monitor a large area and give you the peace of mind to know that everything is running smoothly.
Retailers
Theft prevention
Visible cameras will act as a great deterrent to customer and employee theft.
Monitoring staff
Not just to prevent theft, but also to help ensure that lone workers are safe.
Peace of mind
Simply log on from anywhere using your smart phone and be sure that all is well back at the shop.
Hoteliers / publicans
Monitor staff
You can’t be behind the bar all of the time and it is important that lone bar staff feel safe in an environment where customers sometimes get angry or aggressive.
Theft prevention
Whether it’s staff theft or resident theft, visible cameras are a great deterrent and a useful tool should proof be needed.
Peace of mind
Know that your premises are safe whilst you are away
At Home
Theft prevention
Monitor outhouses and remote buildings where valuables are stored. Ensure your property is safe whilst you are away.
Baby monitors
You can cheaply put a camera in the baby’s room and connect it to your home network. Easily check that he/she is ok without disturbing them.
Pet cams
We all love our pets and wouldn’t leave them alone at home at all, given a choice. However, we don’t always have this luxury. A camera at home can be easily monitored from work so that you know your pets are safe and happy.
